FAQs
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is situated in the southwest of Kenya, along the border with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. It is approximately 270 kilometers (167 miles) from Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.
The Maasai Mara is a year-round safari destination. However, the best time to visit is during the Great Wildebeest Migration between July and October, when millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross from the Serengeti into the Mara. For fewer crowds and lush green landscapes, the low season (November to June) is also rewarding.
The Maasai Mara is home to the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino — as well as cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, crocodiles, and over 450 species of birds. The reserve offers one of the most diverse and concentrated wildlife populations in Africa.
Travelers can reach the Maasai Mara by road or air:
-
By road: A scenic 5–6 hour drive from Nairobi, with opportunities to see rural Kenya along the way.
-
By air: A short 45-minute flight from Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to one of the several airstrips in the Mara.
The Mara offers a wide range of accommodation options — from luxury lodges and tented camps to mid-range and budget-friendly campsites. Many properties are located within or just outside the reserve, offering close proximity to wildlife viewing areas.
Yes. The Maasai Mara is one of Kenya’s safest and most popular destinations. Safari lodges and camps operate under strict safety standards, and professional guides ensure secure game drives. It is, however, advised to follow park rules and your guide’s instructions at all times.
Pack light, comfortable clothing in neutral colors, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, a camera, and a light jacket for cool mornings and evenings. Don’t forget your travel documents and any personal medications.
Yes, the Great Migration is one of the most iconic events in the Maasai Mara. Typically occurring between July and October, it features millions of wildebeest and zebras crossing the Mara River in search of greener pastures — a breathtaking natural spectacle.
Most visitors require a Kenyan eVisa, which can be easily obtained online before travel. Check Kenya’s official eVisa portal for the latest entry requirements based on your nationality.
Beyond traditional game drives, guests can enjoy hot air balloon safaris, guided bush walks, Maasai cultural visits, bird watching, photographic safaris, and sundowner experiences overlooking the savannah
